*This is a Non-Exempt position. Employees in this position are paid an hourly pay rate, on a bi-weekly basis, and are eligible to receive overtime pay for any hours worked over 40 in a work week.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Participates in protocol design, coordination of research projects, or specialized area of technical service. Plan, schedules, and performs a variety of medical treatments, research procedures, data collection, and surgeries on research and laboratory animals under the general direction of the veterinarians or research personnel. Assesses need for veterinary interventions. Manages veterinary technicians and supervises hiring, training, and personnel reviews. Supervises staff by orienting, training and providing ongoing performance feedback. Demonstrates and trains others in the techniques and use of equipment. Ensures the preparation of operational and statistical reports for management and regulatory agencies. Observes animals for signs of illness, trauma, or social instability and reports abnormalities to the appropriate veterinary staff. Monitors the administration of special diets and medication. Recommends new equipment and supply purchases. Investigates equipment malfunctions and schedules maintenance/repair. Keeps abreast of safety procedures and monitors the handling, storage and disposal of hazardous substances. In conjunction with the veterinarians, ensures that the facility complies with federal animal and research regulations. Manages project related information systems and databases including data collection, coding, storage and analysis. Serves as project liaison to other departments, outside organizations, government agencies and product representatives. Assists investigators and research personnel with publication of findings. Collects and analyzes results of studies and provides interpretation of results. Performs related responsibilities as required. Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents. Employees of this classification must be available for weekend and evening work, and be available for emergency response. Certification at LATG level preferred.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Two years of occupational specific training from a college or university or an associate's degree in biology or related field, and eight years of veterinary technical experience with a minimum of five years in a laboratory animal setting, OR a bachelor's degree in science or related field and six years veterinary technical experience, with a minimum of five years in a laboratory animal setting. Certification at the LATg level by AALAS may be substituted for the educational requirement but requires five years veterinary technical experience. Veterinary technical certification by the Georgia licensing board may substitute for the educational requirement but requires six years veterinary technical experience with three years in the laboratory animal setting in which at least one year which is in a supervisory role. A valid Georgia driver's license and an insurable driving record.
