*This is a Non-Exempt position. Employees in this position are paid an hourly pay rate, on a bi-weekly basis, and are eligible to receive overtime pay for any hours worked over 40 in a work week.

JOB DESCRIPTION: This position is a hybrid of animal care and veterinary technician and works with a high level of independence. Participates in general and specialized animal care and feeding, and may administer medications and diets following veterinary protocol. May provide cage-wash duties. Monitors and records health and physical condition of animals, may provide health observations and treatments under veterinary guidance. Notifies professional personnel of conditions warranting attention. Monitors and records the condition and security of research animals (may include after hours). May monitor the security and maintenance of facilities, grounds, vehicles, and equipment; follows the appropriate procedures for handling intruders, trespassers or unauthorized activities. Observes the general condition of animal housing and notifies appropriate staff of the need for repairs or modifications. May monitor temperature, light, humidity and water conditions to ensure a safe and comfortable environment. May provide specialized services such as breeding management, aquatic care and management, research support and training of animal resources employees. Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents. Performs related responsibilities as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A high school diploma or equivalent and five years of animal husbandry/care experience, OR certification as Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) and four years of animal husbandry/care, OR six years of animal husbandry/care experience. In positions involving breeding management, this position will require a Bachelor's degree and one year of experience working with laboratory animals. Must have a working understanding of principles of animal breeding, genetics and behavior of one or more relevant species. The ability to lift up to 50 pounds. May require a valid Georgia driver's license and an insurable driving record.
